Michele and Marcus Bachmann: Mentality and Mental Illness

Marcus Bachmann husband of Michele Bachmann the congresswoman has such a high staff turnover and small inner-circle, Marcus Bachmann is his wife’s closest confidant. Another former staffer said the congresswoman didn’t talk about her husband much, but that he called the office almost every day, sometimes as many as three times a day.

Bachmann’s credentials are nearly nonexistent. His education from Union College (located in Cincinnati, Ohio—a school he never physically attended) was on-line, and at the time he received his PhD (it is in interdisciplinary studies, and not in psychology as he states) was unaccredited (the doctorate in psychology was denounced by the US Department of Education in 2004 as being false, a condemnation that the school’s administrators passed on to their “graduates”—which Bachmann elected to ignore). He is not registered with any of the three boards that certify mental health practitioners and professions in the state. The Minnesota Board of Psychology and the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy confirmed to POLITICO that Bachmann is not licensed with them. Trisha Stark, of the Minnesota Psychological Association, said that the title “clinical therapist” is not widely used in professional circles and that Bachmann is able to operate his clinic because of state rules regarding mental health practice. “Minnesota is one of the only states in which you can practice mental health without a license,” Stark said. As various news agencies and reporters have discovered, the Bachmann and Associates office declined to comment on his professional credentials, and the campaign did not respond to requests for comment. In 2006, City Pages, a Minneapolis alternative weekly, reported on a 2005 presentation that Dr. Bachmann delivered at the Grace Church in Eden Prairie titled “The Truth About the Homosexual Agenda,” during which he introduced three people as “former homosexuals” as proof that sexual orientation is a choice—although he offered no proof that any of the “ex-gays” had ever been homosexual except in thought. That same article also reported that Bachmann & Associates, the Christian counseling center he runs, practiced “reparative therapy,” a method of converting homosexuals to heterosexuality often called “praying away the gay.”

In 2010, in an interview last year with a Christian-radio talk show, Marcus Bachmann, a therapist who runs a faith-infused counseling center here, compared homosexuals to “barbarians” who “need to be educated, need to be disciplined.”  This follows the Wisconsin Evangelical Synod of the Lutheran church, a sect that rabidly follows the most hate-filled writings of Martin Luther after 1543.

Dr. Bachmann’s strong anti-gay views would hardly be noteworthy outside of the suburban towns marked with water towers in the St. Croix Valley, except that his wife, Rep. Michele Bachmann, is suddenly the hottest commodity in the Republican presidential field. She has staffed up with professional consultants, but her husband of 32 years plays a central role. Dr. Bachmann, who recently called himself his wife’s “strategist,” has acted as her media planner, traveling assistant and even personal shopper. They share a bond born of a mutual religious awakening in high school and college, a deep faith in an especially conservative form of Lutheranism, and a common abhorrence of homosexuality.

While Michele Bachmann has repeatedly spoken out against federal subsidies, Marcus Bachmann has taken over $137,000 in federal Medicaid payments. Bachmann press secretary Alice Stewart issued a statement Wednesday contending that it “would be discriminatory” for the clinic to turn away Medicaid patients. The Minnesota Department of Human Services paid Marcus $160,000 for his sectarian counseling.

There is the perennial question: Is Marcus Bachmann gay? What is unique to some but well-known to the Bachmanns, is that if you substitute the word “homosexual” for the word “Jew” in the writings of Martin Luther (On the Jews and Their Lies), you have the very message given by Marcus Bachmann a Lutheran of the Wisconsin Synod of the Lutheran Church: the most radical and hate-filled synod within the Lutheran communion in the USA.

As Bernhard Rust served as Minister of Education in Nazi Germany, wrote:  Since Martin Luther closed his eyes, no such son of our people has appeared again. It has been decided that we shall be the first to witness his reappearance…. I think the time is past when one may not say the names of Hitler and Luther in the same breath. They belong together; they are of the same old stamp [Schrot und Korn]. —Volkischer Beobachter, 25 Aug. 1933.  Substitute “homosexual” for “Jew” in this famous Luther quotation: “Learn from this, dear Christian, what you are doing if you permit the blind Jews to mislead you. Then the saying will truly apply, “When a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into the pit” [cf. Luke 6:39]. You cannot learn anything from them except how to misunderstand the divine commandments…” and from the same book, by Martin Luther: “Therefore be on your guard against the Jews, knowing that wherever they have their synagogues, nothing is found but a den of devils in which sheer self-glory, conceit, lies, blasphemy, and defaming of God and men are practiced most maliciously and veheming [vehemently] his eyes on them.”

Consider also, Martin Luther’s rant: “But for us Christians they stand as a terrifying example of God’s wrath” coupled with “Alas, it cannot be anything but the terrible wrath of God which permits anyone to sink into such abysmal, devilish, hellish, insane baseness, envy, and arrogance. If I were to avenge myself on the devil himself I should be unable to wish him such evil and misfortune as God’s wrath inflicts on the Jews, compelling them to lie and to blaspheme so monstrously, in violation of their own conscience. Anyway, they have their reward for constantly giving God the lie.” Also: “…but then eject them forever from this country. For, as we have heard, God’s anger with them is so intense that gentle mercy will only tend to make them worse and worse, while sharp mercy will reform them but little. Luther and Hitler had strict policy towards Jews (as Bachmann has towards LGBT people):

(1) for Jewish synagogues [gay churches and synagogues according to Bachmann] and schools to be burned to the ground, and the remnants buried out of sight;

(2) for houses owned by Jews [gays according to Bachmann] to be likewise razed, and the owners made to live in agricultural outbuildings;

(3) for their religious writings [Bachmann demands that all gay-tolerant writing, apologetic, fiction, and so forth] to be taken away [and with Bachmann, destroyed];

(4) for rabbis [gay leaders in Bachmann’s denunciation] to be forbidden to preach, and to be executed if they do;

(5) for safe-conduct on the roads to be abolished for Jews;

(6) for usury to be prohibited, and for all silver and gold to be removed and “put aside for safekeeping” [Bachmann wants higher taxes for LGBTs, but argues that LGBTs should be required to pay higher interest rates claiming that LGBT people are not good credit risks]; and

Vander Plaats and Bachmann (Des Moines IA Register)

Marcus Bachmann is more idiotic than Iowa’s Robert Vander Plaats, arguably a closeted homosexual, who argues that homosexuality was equal to second-hand smoke. Vander Plaats has long been preaching hatred against the LGBT community, leading a drive to unseat the Iowa Supreme Court that voted unanimously to recognize that all LGBT people have inalienable rights including the right to marriage and maintain a recognized family under the laws of Iowa.  The photo used was in the Des Moines, Iowa Register, but was removed from the internet on July 8, 2011 at 10:41 a.m. for fear of it costing subscriptions among the radical right and Vander Plaats conservative evangelical extremists.  It was captured for this blog within seconds after the removal as a thumbnail. Like Iowa’s Vander Plaats, the Bachmanns’ attack on same-sex marriage is xenophobic.  Xenophobia is among the most dangerous form of mental illness, as all respected professional organizations have noted, for irrational fear leads to irrational behavior, and when it comes to homosexuality, homophobia is predominate among those with the strongest latent tendencies (and they have the greatest fixation on homosexual pornography, lifestyle, and actions, with homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli (read:  Adams, H.E., Wright, L.W. What the Bachmanns and Vander Plaats ignore is the psychological studies, tests, and scientific investigations into the effects and affects of pornography.  Dr. Patrick Carnes (an internationally known speaker on addiction and recovery issues. He is the author of Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction (1983 reprinted 1992), a pioneer in sexual addiction research, has outlined four core beliefs common in most sexual addicts, with the emphasis on addiction being an uncontrollable need to feel satisfied emotionally, physically and/or sexually. Carnes received a Ph.D. in counselor education and organizational development from the University of Minnesota in 1980.  He works at Pine Grove Behavioral Center in Hattiesburg, MS, although he lives in Phoenix, AZ and travels between home and office.  He is a recovered sex addict, and uses himself as a role model and his most recent patient was golfer Tiger Woods.  Videos are at http://wn.com/Dr_Patrick_Carnes_%7C_What_Is_Addiction?_%7C_SexHelpcom. Carnes has his critics who are also specialists in addiction, and like Roger Libby, a relationship therapist in Seattle, WA notes, a person cannot be addicted to himself or herself—only to an external substance.  The main problem with Carnes is he has not kept notes on his studies or cures and thus they cannot be scientifically duplicated, repeated, or verified, which means that Carnes 12-step program is not scientific (see: http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/reference/timestopics/subjects/s/sexual_addiction/index.html). Addiction is a behavior to achieve the same results, and addiction can be anything from eating food to smoking, drinking, and so forth (http://psychcentral.com/lib/2006/what-is-sexual-addiction/). Sex addicts do not necessarily become sex offenders. Moreover, not all sex offenders are sex addicts. Roughly 55 percent of convicted sex offenders can be considered sex addicts.  sex offenders act not for sexual gratification, but rather out of a disturbed need for power, dominance, control or revenge, or a perverted expression of anger. Defending the "traditional family" where more than 50% get divorced

Addictions usually result from growing up in a dysfunctional family, especially one with rigid rules and fundamental evangelical extremism in the area of religion and religious training, little warmth and affirmation, abandonment, and sexual or emotional abuse.  A rise in hostile actions against homosexuals can be traced primarily to hatred based on fear and self-righteousness and an eagerness to control others, especially what others see, read, say, and with whom they associate.  Psychoanalysts see the expression of anti-gay bias by men and women (who fear being around two or more women whom they do not know to be heterosexual, as is the case with Michele Bachmann) as being a way to reassure themselves that they are not homosexual or by organized hate groups such as Focus on the Family, FAMiLY (in Iowa), the return of the Inquisition in Christian churches, that like Michele and Marcus Bachmann ignore Proverbs 11:9 (http://www.bibble.org/gay/religious/nebraska_methodist_inquisition.html) and the KKK (cf. http://www.cyberpsych.org/homophobia/roughton.htm).

Freud argued further that “the possibility that a chronological outstripping of libidinal development by ego development should be included in the disposition to obsessional neurosis.
